Question of the Month
Q: Help! Sore, cracked Nipples!
A: Sore nipples are an important topic of discussion. Sore nipples can lead to much larger problems if not taken care of. However, there is much that can be done to relieve the pain and corresponding frustration. The reason a mom is having sore nipple issues should always be brought into the picture. Healing a sore nipple does no good if the root of the problem is not addressed. So first make sure you have contacted a lactation consultant to evaluate your baby’s latch.
There are several steps you can take to soothe your sore nipples. Some techniques ease discomfort, some soothe, and some actually heal!
- Breast milk actually has healing qualities. Applying small quantities to the effected areas has been known help heal cracked nipples.
- There are some great creams on the market that work. Lansinoh has been around forever, and still is one that I love. It’s thick! So make sure you really warm it between your fingers first. Baby can nurse right through it, and because of the unique purification process lanolin allergies are not a problem.
- Breast Shells are another good way to give those nipples a rest. They are a cup–shaped shell that you wear in your bra to prevent your nipples from rubbing on fabric and can be used with a nipple cream.
- Comfort Gel Pads by Ameda are my favorite. They are a gel pad that you can store in the refrigerator then apply to your sore/cracked/screaming nipples. They don't just "soothe" they actually heal and hydrate. Seriously. I love this product (Can you tell?).
- In more severe situations I recommend 24 hour nipple rest. Mom pumps, then bottle feeds or cup feeds and gives the nipples complete nursing rest for 24 hours. With a high quality breast pump, the milk supply will not be disrupted and the severe cases of pain can get a head start to relief.
I always like to remind moms that some soreness can be normal in the beginning days of nursing. Each mom and baby is different. It is a new experience and a new feeling. Use these resources and reach out to professionals who have the experience to help with exactly what you need!
